A Counterbalance forklift is a forklift with a weight which counters the balance, allowing the load's weight to be distributed equally across the arms of the forklift. Counterbalance forklifts are made so the weight on the lift is counterbalanced by the weight behind the centre of gravity. The load is projected out from the front of the equipment so it is visible to the forklift operator. This kind of forklift truck should just be used on prepared surface or on level, stable ground.

Training is necessary for forklift operators to understand the correct method to spread the load equally across the arms of the forklift. Trainees would learn how to raise and lower the load vertically and how to tilt the mast of the forklift both forwards and backwards between 5 and 15 degrees.
